WARNING: Licensing and associated rules have been handed over to the European body EASA. Between now and 2012, this body will be bringing in new regulations and practices, over-riding UK law. All the advice given on this site is based on UK CAA regulations, which can be over-ridden by 2012 by EASA. I personally suspect that the UK's stance on letting all licence holders fly UK registered aircraft automatically without further testing or paperwork will be stopped before 2012. There is no information on this topic, but as some European countries (eg: Germany and Holland) are very much against foreign licence holders outside the EU flying their national aircraft now, I believe it is likely that their view will win during EASA rule formation, and this will be forced on all EU countries before 2012. Read on, but realise the information here could change drastically by 2012 |

Intro.... With the growing number of South African PPL holders resident or temporarily resident, in the UK, this site attempts to give support and mentoring through FAQs, information, and contact links. When you first get a SA PPL, it's good to know there are others around in the UK who have been through the stage of 'learning there but flying here' and can give you advice, and maybe introduce you to their airfield or even show you around for a few flights. Once you are happily flying in the UK, you might want to organise a UK-SA fly-in or fly-out, or check how to convert to JAA, or find how to do a SA renewal in the UK or get an SA medical certificate. Alternatively you may be a SA resident PPL planning a vacation in the UK and want advice or company on some UK flying - this site may help. If you don't have a licence at all yet but have decided on South Africa for training, you can get advice here from those with hindsight, they are listed further down the page. or if you are a qualified UK pilot just wanting to have some fun flying on a vacation in South Africa, there are some products to help you plan your trip, and a booklet to explain all the differences you need to know. |
Owner This site has been set up by Irv Lee, a UK based JAA Flight Examiner and aviation writer with SA instructor qualifications enabling him to support (eg: SA renewals and type ratings) and mentor the SA pilot community in the UK (eg: FAQ, Masterclasses, etc). His home page and services are available through the link at the bottom of this page, and emails to this address (eg: webmail at uksa.flyer.co.uk) will go to him. Until recently, email details were given for the pilots listed below, but because there was always the possibility of abuse, these are now stored centrally. If you recognise a name in the pilots list and want to contact them, write to Irv Lee and your note will be forwarded. If you want to be on the distribution list for news or events, tell Irv, If hasn't happened within about 3 days of asking, please ask again, sometimes things do sink in the swamp. |

NEW:Flying during vacations in South Africa
Irv Lee holds a stock of some products to purchase online to help pilots going to South Africa on vacation who want to fly either as a major part of the holiday, or just for the odd trip into the Southern sky. By holding the SA products in the UK, you can get products such as the Air Chart book AVIMAP and the 'Pilot Destinations' booklet (a South African Lodge/Game Park Guide for Pilots) with UK post turn around rather than weeks of waiting. Prices are approximately South African prices, plus the shipping, but are pre-shipped into the UK for fast turn around. If you are a UK pilot, looking to fly in South Africa, you need 'SA on a PPL', a guide to the differences between SA flying and UK flying - vital read before you arrive, and explains all the practical and Air Law differences you need to know. Highly rated by those who have tried it. Click here: Flying Whilst on a SA Vacation |

Newsflash:
The UK CAA are now prepared to consider counting unfinished SA PPL training hours towards training towards a
UK issued JAA PPL. You cannot assume all the hours count though, your log book must be assessed by the
UK CAA who will decide how much of it to count. (If you actually have got a SA PPL and want a JAA one, there's no change, the usual rules apply,
see the question and answer page.)
If you get a SA PPL and want to fly in the UK, you should consider the PPL Masterclasses soon after your return, for meeting other UK pilots in your area and learning more about flying in the UK. If you have a PPL and it's sometime since you flew, try the Rust Remover for Pilots DVD. If it saves you 0.2 on the meter during a checkout, it will have paid for itself. |

Newsflash:
The UK CAA now want any SA Pilot who is converting to a JAA licence or NPPL to
pass the Radio ground exam and practical radio test. This does not stop pilots using their SA R/T
licence with their SA PPLs, it just adds a couple more exams onto conversion. We will be working behind
the scenes to try and get the SA CAA and UK CAA talking to resolve this and hopefully drop this
new requirement for pilots converting, but for the moment, there it is!
The site owner, Irv Lee, is now a UK CAA Radio Examiner and can conduct R/T tests. Make contact for advice on the test whether you want to use him or not. |

| Done: RAF COSFORD (JULY 18th 2003) - Trip Report #1 Here! (pdf) |
| Done: Monday Mar 22nd 2004 - MATZ Talk, place RAF Odiham - organiser Irv Lee.
A very successful evening with over 60 pilots (UK and SA qualified) in attendance, |
| Done:D-DAY 2004 (Sunday June 6th) Coastal France - organiser Irv Lee.
The French CAA have now told Irv that as the SA PPL is an ICAO compliant licence, and that the UK CAA give 'validation' automatically, there is no problem with flying 'G' registered aircraft to France for 'private privileges' using a SA PPL, providing this is not for residency purposes. A small UK-SA invasion took place on the 60th Anniversary of D-DAY (Sunday June 6th 2004). Destination was le Touquet - far east of the invasion beaches, but those were 'restricted areas' on the anniversary, Excellent lunch though! |
| Done: Dec 28th 2004: Heathrow - organiser Irv Lee.
Morning visit to Heathrow Tower to see the NOTAM people with a visit to 'the roof' and also into Air Traffic Control to watch it all happen. Lunch and then over to the Distress 'Cell' (121.5) at West Drayton (the military who handle the Maydays, Pans, etc) |
| Date tbd: Middle Wallop Army Air Base and Museum - organiser Irv Lee.

You know you don't fly often enough, you know how rusty you feel! For 10 years I've been derusting pilots after lay-offs and most of them show the same mistakes, forget the same things, etc. This DVD can be watched before you go flying, and you can see (and recognise) the rust! Pre-flight planning tips too. If owning and watching this DVD can save you just 15 minutes of de-rusting time once at today's rental prices, it will more than worth it.
